Yateley Town Council takes part in country's biggest environmental campaign

Yateley Town Council pledged its support for this year’s Great British September Clean, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

From Monday 14th to Friday 18th September, volunteers were encouraged to pledge to pick in Yateley, Frogmore and Darby Green, in the country’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. Volunteers came to borrow litter pickers, bin bags and safety equipment, and to go out for as long as wanted, wherever they wanted within the community. In total, over 25 black refuse sacks of litter were collected from the green spaces, hedgerow and woodland around Yateley by volunteers including the Yateley & District Lions Club, members of the public, Councillors and Council Officers.

The campaign, which ran from 11th – 27th September 2020, saw up to 600,000 people taking action to clean up streets, parks and beaches across the country. The Great British September Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to show that they love where they live, and in 2019 more than half a million #LitterHeroes collected more than 900,000 bags of rubbish.

Town Clerk for Yateley Town Council, Rochelle Halliday, said ‘We are delighted to have hosted this clean up in Yateley, Frogmore and Darby Green. Together, we can make a massive difference and demonstrate that we love where we live. All of our individual actions can help to create cleaner place for us to live and protect our wildlife, so we were glad to see lots of volunteers throughout the week.’

Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “The overwhelming response to last year’s Great British September Clean showed that there are many hundreds of thousands of people out there who love where they live and are prepared to take action to make it better for themselves, their families and their communities. We are delighted that Yateley Town Council has supported this year’s campaign and would like to thank them for their support. Without councils across the country giving the campaign their backing, our volunteers would not be able to do the incredible job they do.”

Yateley Town Council operates as a litter picking hub all year round, and hopes that this campaign will encourage more use of this facility, whilst highlighting the importance of looking after the local environment.
